NEWS FROM YOUR PRINCIPALS
By Mrs. Jennifer L. Francisco & Mrs. Sarah A. Cogarrs. Sarah A. Cogar
Dear BCS Family,
Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful vacation with your children! On behalf of the entire BCS staff, thank you for the many ways you support us in our work. We wish you a wonderful and happy 2025!
Being school leaders, we are fortunate to experience two opportunities to have a "new year" during each calendar year! In the fall, we begin the school year anew, full of hopes and dreams for our students, staff and school year. The beginning of the new calendar year is a chance for us to revitalize those important hopes and dreams and to recommit to our students and staff to ensure the realization of our goals. We are so lucky to have this mid-year reminder , which serves as a check in on our progress, a charge to stick to it, and a chance to reflect on ways we may need to change course. We invite all of you, to use this time as a chance to join us in this. Whether you are a school staff person, a family member, or an important adult in a child's life, please join us in reflecting on your progress in making the hopes and dreams that we set out with at the beginning of the school year come to be., and to using those reflections to guide your actions into the future. If we all do this, our chances of meeting the goals, hopes and dreams for our students this school year will be realized!
It is our privilege to serve the children and staff of the Berkley Community School. Please feel free to reach out to us if we can help you in any way.
Sincerely,
Jennifer L. Francisco & Sarah A. Cogar
During the month of January the preschool themes will be Everyday Helpers: How do people in our community help us? The literacy program will focus on letters Cc, Nn, Ii, blending syllables, segmenting syllables and rhyming words. The math program will focus on Geometry, equal groups and simple addition with objects.
Happy New Year!! During the month of January, in science and literacy, grade 2 will be learning about the various landforms and bodies of water that exist in nature. This is such an exciting unit for students! We will continue to work with multi-digit addition and subtraction. Please have your child continue to practice addition and subtraction math facts by accessing the various apps and links through CLEVER and on Ms. DiMascio’s website. If your child has an assigned fluency passage please have him/her read it to you daily. Encourage your child to read in his/her free time as well. Mid-year DIBELS testing will be happening this month to check the progress of your child’s reading skills. Lastly, the grade 2 teachers would like to send out a special thank you to all of our grade 2 families for everything you are doing. We truly appreciate it! Let’s have a great New Year!!
Happy New Year! It's nice to start the New Year off with new supplies. Thank you for the classroom gifts! In writing this month, our kindergarteners will begin writing words and sentences independently using kid-writing strategies to sound out words. We're also excited to introduce poetry notebooks, where students will add new poems learned in class and illustrate them. In math, we'll be working on comparing numbers using number lines, exploring addition and subtraction, learning about measurement, and introducing the penny and nickel. The winter DIBELS testing will be conducted this month to assess student progress. A friendly reminder to send in warm weather gear for those cold recess days. We wish everyone a wonderful start to the new year!
Happy 2025! We hope you had a wonderful holiday and start to the new year! Please take a moment to check in with your student about replenishing their school supplies (pencils, erasers, glue sticks, etc.). Additionally, our Grade 3 classrooms could use donations of tissues, paper towels, and baby wipes. Any contributions are greatly appreciated! Be on the lookout for your student’s MA biography project directions, which will be sent home soon. This project is due on February 13th. Students will have two research blocks to gather information for their projects (one in Discovery Zone and one in class). In math, we are wrapping up Unit 3 with a focus on rounding and computational estimation. Students will also be introduced to the standard algorithm for addition as a strategy for solving multi-digit problems. We look forward to continuing this exciting year with your student!
We hope everyone enjoyed their winter break! During December, first graders began learning about and writing poetry. They will continue this unit in January and create a classbook with their poems to share with their families. The students have been loving both reading and writing poems! In reading, students have been working on building their listening and reading comprehension skills as well as spelling long vowel words. In math, we will be wrapping up unit 3 by exploring equations and comparing quantities. We will then begin unit 4 with a giant number line! Lastly, please have your student be prepared for the cold weather as we will have outdoor recess whenever possible. We are excited to begin this new year with all of you!
December was another busy month for our fourth graders! In Math, students have been hard at work collaborating, problem solving, and using hands-on materials to master their multiplication and division skills and to build a greater understanding of fractions. In both literacy and science, students continue exploring various texts and conducting hands-on experiments to learn more about the physical and behavioral features that help animals survive! Next month, students will expand their study of animal adaptations even further with a research project involving Discovery Zone. And in social studies, students are wrapping up their tour of the Northeast region and getting ready to learn all about the Southeastern U.S. We are looking forward to a fun and prosperous 2025 in Grade 4, and we wish all of our Grade 4 families a safe and happy new year!
BCS Activities Committee
Hello 2025! It’s going to be a great year with the BCS Activities Committee! Thank you to everyone who came out to the BCS Holiday Bazaar and made it a huge success. If you are looking for an easy way to help our school out, download the Box Tops app and start scanning your box tops. We’re looking forward to a terrific 2025 with tons more fun planned for BCS! Our next meeting will be held virtually on Wednesday, January 8th at 6:30pm.
Recess Guidelines
Recess is a time for exploration and play. We strive to provide a recess environment that recognizes and encourages safe and appropriate behavior for all children. All children can help make recess a fun and safe place to be.
Great behavior at recess looks like:
-Staying in assigned areas
-Lining up on your signal
-Using equipment correctly
-Dressing for the weather
-Keeping all body parts to yourself
-Being aware of your surroundings
PBIS
BCS is proud to be a PBIS school! PBIS is a framework that supports looking at inappropriate behavior as a skill deficit just like a problem in reading or math. It does not eliminate consequences for poor choices, but skill deficits are remediated through instruction and the teaching of appropriate expectations in each area. PBIS promotes the teaching of pro-social skills so all students can succeed even when confronted with potential conflicts, and an ongoing acknowledgement system for students who meet expectations.

Next Generation MCAS
Students in grades three and four will take the Next Generation MCAS in the spring. The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) shares that the MCAS has been upgraded to better measure the critical skills students need for success in the 21st century; deeper understanding, knowledge application, synthesizing and writing. Most students will take the test on the computer reflecting the digital world we live in today. The next generation MCAS reports your child's scores in categories that better show whether your child is meeting expectations for their grade level. (Source: Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education website.) If you wish to learn more about the MCAS, visit the DESE website at www.mass.edu
Computer Lab Updates!
Ms. DiMascio invites you to check out their websites often for updates to classroom learning! Click here to access the website.
Note About Smart Watches
Please be aware that students should not wear smart watches to school. These watches often pose a distraction. We respectfully ask that these devices be limited to use outside of the school day. Thank you for your help!
Snowplow Naming Contest!
In December, we invited our classes to submit ideas to name Mr. McCarthy's Snow Plow! There were many great entries, but congratulations go out to Ms. Siedentopf's Class who chose the winning name... Flurious George!!
New Years is a time when we tend to dream and set lofty self-improvement goals. A lack of success towards these unrealistic goals may lead to increased stress, pressure and negative self-feelings. Brian Tracy summed this up by stating, “A goal without a plan is just a dream." A realistic goal is one that fits within your current circumstances and abilities. Making goals that fit your life, current habits, and routines increase the chance for successful completion. By breaking our goals down into smaller steps we will feel more accomplished and likely to continue making progress. We want to encourage our children and students to do the same. For example, instead of saying “ I want to get all A’s” we can help them to identify first steps they can take, such as, “I will write down my homework assignments each night”. The following steps are widely recognized as an actionable way to create realistic and attainable goals.
-Write down your goals
-Make your goals SMART ( Specific to a skill or outcome, Measurable progress, Attainable, Realistic to your abilities, and Time Oriented)
-Determine what you need to do to achieve them
We are proud to recognize the following Students of the Month. There are many reasons that children are selected as Student of the Month! Some reasons include a great effort with academic works or demonstrating our school values of Responsible, Respectful and Safe. It might be that a child selected who showed themselves to be a classroom citizen, or that they are showing nice growth in their academic, emotional and/or social skills. These students should be proud of their accomplishment!
